THE STORY

Special-ordered with options normally only seen on the 400 model, this 1957 Studebaker Golden Hawk is reported to have been purchased by the original owner at the Chicago Auto Show. Serving as his daily driver and then parked in his garage until it was sold in the late 1980s, it was later tracked down by the original owner’s grandson via the Studebaker Registry. After acquiring the Hawk, The Last Detail in Chicago, Illinois, performed a gentle, sympathetic restoration, including rust removal from the lower rocker, a two-stage repaint, the replacement of custom, woven carpeting and a labor-intensive reconditioning of the original leather interior. The car was serviced and reunited with the original owner’s wife for a drive down Sheridan Road in Illinois and is being offered now by the grandson.

Powered by a 289/275 HP V-8 engine with the Jetstream supercharger and a 3-speed automatic transmission, the Golden Hawk is finished in gold paint with white fins and trim and a trunk-mounted spare tire well on the trunk. It’s adorned by the requisite upright grille, spotlight, chrome bumpers and polished trim, and full-size wheel covers top gold-painted wheels with wide whitewall tires. The tan interior features the metal dash trim, instrumentation including a 160 MPH speedometer and vacuum gauge for the supercharger, an AM radio and a rear armrest. The original invoice accompanies the car.

For 1956, the Studebaker Golden Hawk was introduced to offer what the company promoted as a “real sportscar,” but with seating for five. It was touted as a step ahead with its advanced, supercharged engine, dynamic chassis, low overall height and outstanding performance. For 1957, the supercharged Packard 352 CI V8 was replaced by a supercharged 289 CI V-8 that offered the same amount of power from a smaller, lighter, more efficient engine. Motor Life magazine was impressed by the Golden Hawk’s 0-60 MPH times of around 9 seconds; interestingly, Sports Car Illustrated tested the 1957 Chrysler 300C and recorded just about the same 0-60 MPH time despite its massive 392/375 HP Hemi V-8 and dual 4-barrel carburetors. The Golden Hawk had just a single 2-barrel.
