The 1959 full-size Pontiacs proved to be a game-changer for the division, which was enjoying a turnaround that was orchestrated by General Manager Semon E. “Bunkie” Knudsen. Crisp, all-new styling distanced itself from the rather bulbous designs of the 1950s, while a new 389 CI V-8 set a new level of power and performance, which was paying dividends in racing. Perhaps the most significant aspect of the 1959 Pontiacs was the new “Wide Track” chassis design, which moved the wheels out to fill out the wheel wells and aid handling. Wide Track became an iconic marketing tool for Pontiac throughout the 1960s and was picked up again in the late 1990s.
This 1959 Bonneville Convertible is an impressive example of the first Wide Track Pontiacs. It remains in highly original and unrestored condition. Under the hood is a 389 CI V-8 engine and automatic transmission. Other features include power steering and power brakes, factory air conditioning, power windows, tri–tone power leather seats, a Wonderbar signal-seeking AM radio, dual exterior mirrors, tri-bladed spinner wheel covers and whitewall tires.
As time goes on, the available pool of 60-plus-year-old cars in original, unrestored condition will continue to dwindle, making this 1959 Bonneville Convertible a rare and very desirable example of the car that changed Pontiac’s trajectory in the market and secured its reputation as a high-performance carmaker.
