Out of the 697 Trans Ams built in 1969, just nine of them were built with the top-level 400 CI Ram Air IV V-8 engine and a Turbo 400 automatic transmission. This Cameo White 1969 Pontiac Trans Am is one of those exceptionally rare vehicles and it has covered just 85 miles since it was treated to a comprehensive restoration.
The Trans Am was inspired by the SCCA Trans-Am race series and Pontiac paid $5 per car to SCCA to license the name. The new top-performing Firebird was Pontiac’s response to the Chevrolet Camaro Z28 and Ford’s Boss 302 Mustang, which were competing in the series. Though the Pontiac featured an engine much larger than the SCCA rules allowed for the class, the Ram Air 400s were installed in anticipation of Pontiac developing its own 303 CI V-8, which never actually made it to production. In the Firebird, the Ram Air IV was rated at 345 HP at 5,400 RPM with 430 lb-ft at 3,700. Actual horsepower was closer to 425 HP once the tab preventing wide-open throttle was removed.
In addition its original drivetrain comprising the matching-numbers 400/345 HP V-8 engine, Turbo Hydra-Matic transmission and 3.90:1 Positraction rear axle, this Trans Am also features power steering and power brakes, a blue bucket seat interior with a center console, the U30 Rally Gauge Package and the heavy-duty suspension with front and rear sway bars, specific shocks and springs, and high-density bushings.
Documentation for this spectacular machine includes PHS documents, the original owner’s manual, original warranty card, a window sticker, a dealer order form and vehicle registrations and inspections. Ownership of a 1969 Trans Am of any configuration is already an exclusive fraternity. The opportunity to own a 1969 Trans Am with the Ram Air IV and an automatic is an opportunity to own the rarest powertrain offering available in these Pontiac beasts. This is an exceptional investment-grade vehicle that would be an excellent addition to any well-curated collection.
