Reigning as America’s best-selling muscle car in 1969, Chevrolet’s Chevelle SS was only available for model year 1970 on the top-shelf Chevelle Malibu trim and upholstery level. Base power was delivered by the renowned 396 CI big-block mill in 350 and 375 HP tune, with the upsized 454 CI V-8 optional starting with the high-torque, 360 HP LS5 option and the wicked LS6 with 450 HP on tap.
The mighty LS6 grabbed the headlines on the track for 1970 and 1971, especially Ray Allen’s infamous 11-second NHRA SS/EA LS6 convertible prepped by New Jersey’s Truppi-Kling Competition. As the lone Chevrolet capable of regularly defeating Chrysler’s factory-backed 426 Hemi cars on the quarter-mile, Allen’s LS6 convertible helped establish an unbeatable reputation and Hot Rod magazine’s aptly titled “Earth Mover” feature article on the mighty factory-available Chevrolet.
According to marque experts, 8,773 Chevelles were equipped with the RPO Z15 SS454 option for 1970. While there is no production breakout given by engine spec and body style, it is known from GM Heritage records that 4,475 Chevelles were equipped with the potent LS6 option.
Built at the Baltimore, Maryland, Chevrolet plant, shipped on February 25, 1970 and sold new at Arnaud Auto Ltd. in Sept-Isles, Quebec, Canada, this muscle car icon is the product of an extensive frame-off, concours-level restoration to correct specifications. Finished in Classic White with black Rally stripes, a power-operated black convertible top and matching A51 Strato bucket-seat interior, it features power by a correct CRV-suffix 454/450 HP V–8 engine. A Muncie M22 4-speed manual transmission and 4.10 12–bolt rear end deliver the power and performance.
Other highly desirable features include the F41 suspension, power steering, power brakes with front discs, and the unforgettable cowl induction fresh-air hood. Interior features include the cushion-rimmed steering wheel, Delco pushbutton radio and Muncie shifter. A set of five-spoke SS wheels mounting Firestone Wide Oval tires provide the finishing touches to this potent performer.
Documents include definitive GM of Canada paperwork listing original data, features and options as required when the vehicle was imported new to Canada. Other desirable documents include extensive photos of the restoration, including pertinent stamps, castings and date codes.
