Featuring aggressive and unforgettable Pininfarina-designed and Scaglietti-built bodywork, Ferrari’s 365 GT4 Berlinetta Boxer (BB) was Ferrari’s long-awaited midengine challenge to Lamborghini’s Miura and Maserati’s Bora. With styling rooted in Pininfarina’s daring P6 concept of 1968 and first shown at Turin in prototype form in 1971, the production-ready 365 GT4 BB debuted at the 1973 Paris Salon with a midmounted 4.4L flat-12 engine derived from the Scuderia’s contemporary Tipo 312 B Grand Prix cars.
A blistering performer, even by today’s jaded standards, the BB and successors remain historic as Ferrari’s first-ever 12-cylinder, midengine road models. Steady development brought the 512 BB by 1976 and the ultimate 512 BBi by 1981, with the “i” suffix denoting Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection. Some 40 years later, the 512 BBi remains a ferocious performer, capable of nudging 175 MPH and quarter-mile times under 14 seconds. Just 1,007 examples of the 512 BBi were produced from 1981 through 1984 and the advent of the Testarossa. None were officially imported into the United States, where the BB was a “Grey Market” import and then federalized under the DOT/EPA.
While already quite scarce, this 1982 Ferrari 512 BBi is rarer still as one of an extremely small, limited-production run of Ermenegildo Zegna Edition cars sporting the fashion designer’s special interior treatment. Built in April 1982 and delivered new to Charles Pozzi SA, the noted Ferrari dealership in France, this 512 BBi was imported into the U.S. during the mid-1990s and benefits from an engine-out service performed in 2019.
Power is delivered by Ferrari’s renowned 4.9L/335 HP flat 12-cylinder engine equipped with the Bosch K-Jetronic fuel-injection system and paired to a 5-speed manual gearbox/transaxle using Ferrari’s classical gated shift quadrant. Finished in Rosso Corsa, the Boxer is distinctively complemented by a Nero Stoffa interior with designer wool inserts by fashion designer Ermenegildo Zegna. Other features include the Cibie foglamps, Vitaloni mirrors, Cromodora wheels and ventilated disc brakes. An original tool kit and Ferrari Classiche certification with Red Book are included with the offering of this exceedingly rare and well documented 1980s Ferrari supercar.
