Succeeding the brilliant and supercar-fast 550 Maranello, Ferrari’s first font-engine, two-seater V-12 since the 365 GTB/4 Daytona of the early 1970s, the 575M Maranello launched for 2002 and upped the ante with a larger engine delivering greater performance than its predecessor. The 575M also featured Ferrari’s first application of the race-derived F1-paddle-shift automatic transmission with a V-12 engine.

While the 550–based Barchetta provided the thrilling open-air experience of a pure roadster, Ferrari developed the 575M Superamerica with an innovative new convertible-top system providing all the open-air freedom of a roadster with the all-weather security of a coupe. The “Revocromico” rotating hardtop of the 575M Superamerica was constructed from a carbon–fiber frame integrated with glass capable of variable opacity at the turn of a dial, the first roof of its kind ever fitted to a production car. At the touch of a button, the Superamerica transforms into a convertible with the roof rotating back to rest flush with the car’s slightly recessed rear decklid in 10 seconds, leaving the rear window in place as a wind deflector.
