Replacing the 575M Maranello as Ferrari’s two-seat, V-12 GT standard-bearer, the 599 GTB Fiorano debuted at the 2006 Geneva Motor Show. A groundbreaking achievement, the new model celebrated its maker’s rich history and competition DNA with its Fiorano name honoring Ferrari’s Pista di Fiorano test track. While intended as a dual-purpose grand touring and sports car, the 599 could easily outperform Ferrari’s iconic twin-turbo F40 of the late 1980s, even with its luxurious accoutrements.
The 599’s 6.0L DOHC 48-valve V-12 engine, internally designated F140C, was derived directly from that of the harder-edged and decidedly menacing Enzo, which, just a few years earlier, reigned as the most technologically advanced supercar ever to emanate from Maranello. Weighing in at 3,953 pounds, according to Car & Driver magazine’s June 2007 road test, which was 691 pounds more than the uncompromising Enzo, and packing 39 fewer horses, the 599 GTB clocked a blistering 3.7-second sprint from zero to 62 MPH, rivaling the Enzo. Much of this stunning performance must be attributed to Ferrari’s brilliant F1-SuperFast gearbox, which was refined to deliver lighting-fast gear changes in 100 milliseconds. Developing 611 BHP at 7,600 RPM, the 599 GTB is capable of reaching 205 MPH, and thanks to its F1-derived traction control system, it can also challenge the accelerative urge of the McLaren F1.
Following in the footsteps of its fierce V–8 stablemate, the F430, the 599 GTB is the second Ferrari model to feature the now–trademark manettino dial on the steering wheel. Featuring five specific settings to adjust the traction-damper settings and to monitor throttle mapping, this race-derived device gives the driver the choice of a docile, driver-friendly Ferrari, with a no-holds-barred alter ego on command.
Featuring the desirable HGTE handling package, this 599 GTB Fiorano’s mighty 6.0L V-12 engine is paired with an automatic transmission. The Rosso Corsa exterior finish is fully wrapped in PPE film and includes Scuderia shields. The beige and black interior includes optional power Recaro bucket seats plus dual-zone climate control and a Bose Hi-Fi stereo with iPod connectivity. Brembo carbon ceramic brakes deliver stopping with Rosso brake calipers behind five-spoke alloy wheels mounting new tires. Documents include a copy of the window sticker, the owner’s manual and books, service records and a tool kit.
