THE STORY

For those who are not familiar with the 1969 Mustang E, you’re not alone. With only 96 examples produced, even the most dedicated of Mustang experts have probably never seen, let alone heard of, the 1969 Mustang E. This concours Mustang E Fastback is likely the only one left in existence and the only one known to exist today.

In an era of Cobra Jet and Boss Mustangs, the Mustang E was conceived for the 1969 Mobil Gas Economy Run, an annual competition that determined actual long-distance fuel mileage for the most fuel-efficient cars. Because prototypes or one–offs were not allowed, Ford created 96 of the Mustang E fastbacks (just enough to send to dealerships and be considered as an official production model vehicle) to be eligible to compete in the Mobil One event.

The rare Mustang E is powered by an exclusive 155 HP, L Code engine. It is a uniquely designed 250 CI inline 6-cylinder engine with a higher 9.5:1 compression ratio and fitted with a special Autolite carburetor. Other fuel-saving equipment included a C4 Cruise-O-Matic transmission with a 1-inch oversized torque convertor, a 2.33:1 rear axle ratio and a specialty cooling system incorporating a 196-203 degree thermostat, radiator with 13 fins per inch, and a six-blade, 17-inch cooling fan.

As a Mustang “Economy Package” per its description on the Deluxe Marti Report, the Mustang E came from the factory with only two options: the Philco AM radio and wheel covers. None of the Mustang E models were equipped with factory air conditioning.
