1970 Dodge Hemi Challenger R/T SE

THE STORY

Recognition in the automotive hobby can take a lot of work. Just by owning a car as rare as a Hemi Challenger R/T SE, you start moving away down from the crowd. When the car is factory triple black as well, it is even more unique. There were just 37 1970 Hemi Challenger R/T SEs produced with the TorqueFlite automatic transmission, and only three were produced in black.

Documented with its original broadcast sheet and original window sticker, this 1970 Dodge Hemi Challenger R/T SE attained Mopar Nationals OE Gold honors in 2001 after it was rotisserie restored to exacting specs by Jim Spetzman, and more recently it has had a mechanical inspection and tune completed by Sports and Collector Car Center in Tempe, Arizona. Sold new at Glendale Dodge in Los Angeles, California and featured in the August 2002 issue of Mopar Collector’s Guide, this car is verified via a Chrysler Registry Report and its underhood fender tag, and it’s accompanied by restoration receipts and an extensive collection of restoration images detailing the level of work done.

With its sport hood open, the original matching-numbers 426/425 HP Hemi V8 engine is revealed. There are dual Carter AFB 4barrel carburetors underneath the air cleaner and black valve covers over the race-inspired hemispherical cylinder heads. Ordered new with the A32 Super Performance Axle Package car, the A727 TorqueFlite automatic transmission is backed by a Dana 60 differential with 4.10 Sure Grip gearing. There is also power steering and power brakes with front discs.

The TX9 Black paint is complemented by a black vinyl top and rich black leather interior upholstery. The interior is deluxe as well, as this car came with power windows, tinted glass, a Rallye dash, wood-grain trim accenting, a remote driver’s mirror and an AM/FM radio with rear speaker. The outside features SE roof emblems, 426 Hemi hood emblems, 15-inch painted steel wheels with small-diameter hubcaps and Goodyear Polyglas GT tires. As optioned, this car is wildly rare, and with only two years of Hemi Challenger production, it will turn heads in any setting.
