Documented with the original Ford Motor Company invoice and a Marti Report, this comprehensively restored 1969 Ford Mustang GT Convertible was delivered new to its first owner in British Columbia, Canada. The year 1969 saw the introduction of the new Mach 1 Fastback into the Mustang lineup, replacing the GT Equipment Group as the premier production high-performance package. As a result of that change, total production of Mustangs ordered with the GT Equipment Group was limited to just 6,694, only 1,127 of which were convertibles. Of those, just 26 GT convertibles were equipped with the drag-racing-purposed 428 CI Cobra Jet Ram Air V-8 engine.
Introduced in 1968 to compete in NHRA Stock Super Stock classes, the 428 Cobra Jet featured 427 Low Riser cylinder heads, GT-spec hydraulic camshaft and exhaust manifolds, and a 735 CFM Holley 4-barrel on an aluminum 428 Police Interceptor intake manifold. Conservatively rated at 335 HP, the Cobra Jet’s actual output of some 400 HP demanded a robust driveline incorporating heavy duty 3-speed automatic or 4-speed manual transmissions and a 9-inch rear end with 31-spline axles.
As before, the GT Equipment Group included contrasting sill stripes, a GT gas cap, GT center caps on styled steel wheels wearing Goodyear Polyglas tires, heavy duty suspension, NASCAR hood pins and a simulated hood scoop, the latter replaced with a Shaker scoop on 428CJ-equipped versions.
Presenting in Raven Black with a power-operated black soft top over a Dark Red interior, this 1969 Cobra Jet convertible boasts a matching-numbers driveline including the factory R-Code 428 CI Cobra Jet Ram Air V-8, the original carburetor and distributor, and the factory Shaker hood scoop. Additional features include power steering and brakes, rechromed bumpers and restored original GT wheels with NOS trim rings and GT center caps.
The Dark Red interior features Deluxe Light Teak accents and factory high-back Mach 1 Comfort Weave seats, a rare option for the convertible. The factory AM/8-track stereo was updated to a 1969 AM/FM radio, and the original speedometer was replaced with an NOS 240 KPH European export unit for use in Canada. Among the rarest Mustangs of the classic muscle car era, this 428 Cobra Jet Ram Air convertible has all the makings of a collection centerpiece.
